Week 26 – Get Organized:

How many times have you purchased something, only to find out shortly thereafter that you already had one?  Even as a decently organized individual, I am guilty of making this mistake.  Whether it’s buying another pair of jeans for my son, or a spice that was in the back of my cabinet, buying unneeded things can waste money.

Just as you organized the gifts in Week 13, start to organize other areas of your home during Week 26.  Organize anything you can think of -your closets, your pantry, your winter/summer accessories, your office materials, garden supplies, etc.  Make a list of areas you would like to organize and set a goal to tackle one area a week or month.  Post the list in an area you will see everyday so you can keep a reminder going and feel a sense of accomplishment as you see the items become crossed off the list.  Make sure you know what you have on a regular basis.  Also, when going through your food items, pay attention to expiration dates and place the items expiring first in front or look for ways to incorporate them into upcoming meals.

An area that I organized was the cabinet under the master bedroom vanity.  I was so surprised to see how many lotions, shampoos and soap I had stored (ok… thrown) under there.  It was nice to find a few things and get a space that had stored bathroom items for over six years into a neat, clean, organized area.

Keeping a clean, organized area will make things easy to find when needed.  When items go untouched or unused for months or years at a time, they become buried and forgotten.  Getting organized will not only help you remember what you DO have, but will also help you remember where they are!

Key areas on my organization list:
  • Linen Closets (spare gifts are located here)
  • Kitchen Pantry
  • Garage
  • Kids Toys
  • Refrigerator/Freezer
  • Laundry Cabinets
  • Storage Closet
  • Under Kitchen Sink
  • Office Desk/File Cabinet
  • Spice Rack
