Week 25 – Check for Promotions:

Many people are probably aware that phone, cable, satellite and other service related companies run specials on a regular basis; but, did you know that you do not have to be a new customer to receive this offer?  Simply call and request the special pricing be applied to your account.  I noticed this trick when every time I called my cable company, they offered me a new, better price.  So, on week 25 pick up the phone or check company website for the latest promotions and ads.  If they are offering a special lower than the pricing you are paying call and ask (or demand, if necessary) the special pricing be applied to your account.  Most companies will happily oblige this request.  If not, it’s time for you to start looking for a provider that offers better customer service.

Do more research and check other providers.  If a competitor is offering lower pricing, many times your provider will match this pricing.  Since it costs less money to keep a current customer happy than it does to get a new customer, the power is in your hands.  Do your research and make some phone calls – a few hours could save you hundreds of dollars!

As I mentioned in Week 7, I bundled my cable, internet and phone into one service.  Bundles combine many services together and are being offered by more and more companies. I check on-line regularly for specials from this provider and have never seen one lower than what I am paying (since week 7).  This is good to know, but I will continue to watch.

If you are in a contract that locks your pricing, be sure to do a lot of research before singing the next contract.  Even if you don’t intend to change providers, shop around and understand how your provider’s pricing compares to the market.  If you find a better deal, negotiate and threaten to take your business elsewhere.  Bottom line – before you sign for another year (or longer!) be certain that you have done all you can to lower that price and make sure you are comfortable with the pricing you are locking down, because you will be stuck with it.
